Guide and angler with a leaping brown trout on the East Walker River

Who we are

The Trip We'd Take Ourselves

A fourth-generation working cattle ranch, 2.5 miles of private East Walker River, and a camp built by veteran guides who know exactly what matters.

Where the Ranch Meets the River

Sweetwater Outpost operates on a fourth-generation working cattle ranch on the Nevada/California border. Our basecamp sits at 5,800 feet on the edge of the Great Basin, nestled at the base of the Sweetwater Mountains — approximately 11 miles north of Bridgeport, California on Hwy 182.

Roughly two and a half miles of the East Walker River meanders through the property. This private section is a trout factory teeming with robust rainbow and brown trout. Fishing pressure on the ranch is reduced by nearly 93% compared to the public sections that get absolutely hammered — and that unequivocally leads to more natural, relaxed feeding behavior, especially off the surface.

Sweetwater Outpost is a strictly catch-and-release fishery. Only barbless flies are used on the property.

How we do it

Not Five-Star. Not Camping in the Dirt. Just Right.

Sit back and take in the whole experience without dealing with overcrowded rivers or hoity-toity accommodations. Whether you're standing knee-deep in a lonely section of river casting to a big brown sipping emergers on the far bank, or sitting around the campfire with steaks and burgers off the ranch grill — we've got you covered. This is the experience we'd want for ourselves, and we'd love to show it to you.

Private Ranch Water

2.5 miles of exclusive East Walker River on a fourth-generation cattle ranch. 93% less pressure than public water.

Veteran Fly Fishing Guides · East Walker River

We're a team of veteran fly fishing guides who have created a unique experience that provides private, comfortable, and affordable camping-based fly fishing. We know this river — the hatches, the runs, the fish, and the moods of the water in every season.

Our goal isn't just to put you on fish. We want you to walk away a more skillful, more confident angler — with the knowledge to fish well anywhere you find trout. Dry fly, nymph, streamer, dry-dropper — we fish it all and we'll teach you why and when.

The East Walker is famous for a reason. It is by far the most productive trout stream for large trout in the entire Sierra. But that's no secret. Having your own section of it to yourself is. That's part of what makes it special. The fish are wild, the hatches are spread out, and the setting — high desert, sage, big sky, volcanic rimrock — is unlike anywhere else on the Eastside.
